Hourly Rate Calculator

Convert your annual salary to an hourly rate. Account for vacation weeks and custom working hours.

How to Calculate Your Hourly Rate

Your hourly rate depends on your annual salary, the number of hours you work per week, and how many weeks per year you actually work (excluding vacation). The basic formula is:

Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Working Weeks × Hours Per Week)

For example, if you earn $75,000 per year, work 40 hours per week, and take 2 weeks of vacation, your hourly rate would be $75,000 ÷ (50 × 40) = $37.50/hour.

Why Knowing Your Hourly Rate Matters

Understanding your true hourly rate helps you make better financial decisions. It lets you evaluate whether overtime is worth it, compare job offers with different structures (salary vs hourly), decide if a freelance project is worth your time, and understand the real cost of your time when making purchases.

Average Hourly Rates by Industry

Hourly rates vary dramatically by profession. In the US, average hourly earnings by sector: technology ($50-80/hr), healthcare ($30-60/hr), finance ($35-70/hr), education ($25-45/hr), retail ($12-20/hr), and hospitality ($10-18/hr). Remote workers in tech often earn $60-120/hr when you factor in their total compensation package.

Salary vs. Hourly: Total Compensation

When comparing salaried and hourly positions, remember that salary typically includes benefits worth 20-40% of base pay: health insurance ($6,000-$20,000/yr value), retirement contributions (3-6% match), paid time off (2-4 weeks), and other perks. A $50/hour contract role may actually pay less than a $90,000 salaried position with full benefits.

Accounting for Unpaid Time

Don't forget to account for time that reduces your effective hourly rate: commute time (which adds unpaid hours to your workday), unpaid lunch breaks, and any work you do outside official hours (emails, preparation). Your "true" hourly rate may be lower than you think.
